Most anybody who embarks on a journey of personal growth through exercise, sport, diet, or nutrition, at some point becomes interested enough to learn more and do some reading. There is a huge and rapidly growing amount of fitness information available on the internet and in bookstores. A Google search on almost any fitness topic will yield hours upon hours of potential reading. Unfortunately, much of the information out there is based upon thin evidence, poor science, or badly informed personal opinions. It is common to see completely contradictory information and advice, sometimes even on the same website.
This is understandable. The human body is an incredibly complicated, amazing, almost magical system. So complicated that even in our present state of technological and scientific advancement, we humans still don’t have a very good grasp on how our own bodies work. Scientific research on humans is slow, difficult, expensive, and highly regulated. Research tends to be directed at medical problems rather than at proactive fitness. Some experiments simply cannot be performed for ethical reasons. Furthermore, individuals are different enough that a highly successful fitness protocol for one person may be a disaster for another. Finally, as in many other arenas, many people in the fitness world tend to choose sides on controversial topics, and then ignore or discount any evidence contrary to their own opinion.
This blog will not solve any of these problems. I am not an expert in fitness, nutrition, nor even biological sciences. All I hope to accomplish here is to provide a resource for people who wish to remain open-minded and explore ideas and topics in fitness which are far from settled science. Not being an expert, I have no turf to defend, no book to promote, and no emotional involvement in any of the topics I’d like to explore (aside from some personal experiences). I do however like to think of myself as a rational thinker. So the goal is to discuss various topics in fitness, objectively. Based upon whatever evidence is currently available. That means almost everything will be subject to change, and almost no conclusions will come with a high degree of certainty.
Not much of a sales pitch, but that’s the concept for the blog. Please enjoy and feel free to comment.
